Ducking Hunting on the Oregon Coast
Monday, January 29th, 2007
Broadside Adventures Pro-Staff member Wil Askew was joined by Jeremy Henricks on a duck hunt with noted outdoor guide Jody Smith of Elkton, Oregon. The trio was joined by a few other friends as they headed to the coastal town of Reedsport.
“The day started off really nice - too nice as a matter of fact and the birds were not interested in flying lower” explains Askew. “We decided to head to coast and instantly spotted numerous birds where we wanted to hunt.” The group waded out to a small point to build a blind and set-up for some action. Even with the clouds high in the air the ducks began to work their way back to the hunters. A few spiratic shots downed a few coastal ducks and soon the weather began to turn blustery. “We had wind and rain pelting us from every direction!” remarks Askew about the days conditions.
“It didn’t take long before we had ducks coming in from every direction. I am not the best duck caller but it did not seem to matter and they came in.” Guide Jody Smith had a few choice words about the days action as well. “It a good thing those ducks are tone deaf!”
Every few minutes the shooters would raise to their feet and shoot towards passing ducks that seemed to pass at 70 plus miles per hour with the wind. Two highly trained labs were put to work as duck after duck fell into the flooded field. “We got some great footage, but unfortunate it looks like it was filmed in a fish bowl” added Askew.
As the fog rolled in and the light faded the shooting hours quickly came to an end and the hunters were forced to simple admire the hundreds of ducks that flocked back to their roosting pond. Askew gave a short wrap up with the sounds of ducks and geese flying directly overhead.
“Great hunt, a little wet, a little misrable for most, but if you are looking for a good day to duck hunt this is the weather you wish for!” Askew concluded.
Watch for this amazing hunt on a future episode of Broadside Adventures.
